About Garrett
Garrett Neiman (he/him) is a nonprofit entrepreneur, social justice activist, and writer. On June 20th, 2023, Hachette released his debut book: Rich White Men: What It Takes to Uproot the Old Boys' Club and Transform America.
Garrett was the founding CEO of CollegeSpring, a national college access nonprofit that was recognized by the Obama White House. He was also a co-creator of Liberation Ventures, a philanthropic fund focused on building power toward reparations.
Garrett has a BA in economics from Stanford, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a master’s in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School. Currently, he serves as a Senior Fellow at Prosperity Now and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality.
As Garrett entered elite spaces, he found himself courting billionaires and other powerful white men, only to discover that the elite he had once been eager to join was often part of the problem. This personal crisis led Garrett to shift his focus from seeking approval from rich white men, to challenging himself and other elites to show up bigger and better for equity and social justice.
While he still comes up short on many occasions, Garrett strives to practice equity in his own life. A recent decision he is proud of is partnering with allen kwabena frimpong – a cultural strategist, artist, and cooperative entrepreneur – to transform what would have been his author royalties into a royalties cooperative. Garrett partnered with allen to co-create a consent-based structure in which six social justice partners are receiving $5,000 honorariums plus 6/7 (86%) of author royalties (beyond the advance), in exchange for offering accountability and guidance. Partners are receiving royalties with ‘no strings attached:’ partners are not required to support the project in any way, and partners will continue to receive royalties even if they criticize Garrett publicly or divest from the partnership. Garrett’s hope that this approach will prevent this project from reproducing disparities in wealth and power, and enable him to practice and help to normalize relationships that center accountability, equity, humility, reciprocity, and self-determination.
Garrett lives on Wampanoag Land (outside of Boston, Massachusetts) with his partner Pooja, child Ayan, and dog Kingsley.
